A major U.S. bank is rolling out new rails that let businesses move between traditional bank money and stablecoins without juggling separate crypto systems.

Citi and Coinbase expanded their collaboration with two U.S.-first products that connect fiat banking to stablecoin payments, says Citi.

Coinbase Virtual Accounts use Citi’s Virtual Account Wallet so payments customers get bank-account-like features, with incoming fiat automatically converted into stablecoins.

Spring by Citi lets institutional clients accept stablecoin payments at checkout through Coinbase Payments, with automatic conversion to fiat and Citi settling as the bank of record.

Merchants can reach more than 150 million stablecoin holders without holding, custodying or managing digital assets themselves, according to the release.

Coinbase’s Alec Lovett, head of infrastructure product, addressed why the bank link matters.

“Clients building on Coinbase have always needed a fast, compliant bridge between fiat and stablecoins, and Citi gives us that at scale.”

The push builds on an earlier October 2025 partnership and comes as U.S. and EU stablecoin rules keep tightening.
