A Florida woman lost $15,825 after callers posing as law enforcement threatened to arrest her for missing jury duty and steered her to Bitcoin ATMs, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives later traced one of those crypto deposits, worth about $4,209 when it was made, through several wallets to a Cash App account tied to Annie Lee Ashley, 61, of East Dublin, Georgia, reports Yahoo News.

Ashley was extradited from Georgia and booked in Volusia County on September 25th of 2026 on a grand theft charge. Court records say she was released the same day on a $15,000 surety bond, and her attorney later entered a written not-guilty plea.

A charging affidavit says the victim reported the fraud on August 7th of 2026 and that two Bitcoin ATM deposits that day totaled about 0.0655 BTC (about $4,209) and 0.1063 BTC (about $6,832). ATM fees meant those crypto amounts did not match the full cash she put in.

When contacted, Ashley acknowledged the Cash App account but said she never received the money and that other people had access to her phone, investigators wrote.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood has tied a wider Volusia probe of law-enforcement impersonation scams to Georgia prisons, including Wheeler Correctional Institution and Calhoun State Prison, where inmates allegedly use contraband phones while outsiders move the crypto proceeds.
