Airdrops are free tokens, and free tokens attract both genuine projects and skilled scammers. Every major airdrop season brings a wave of fake claim sites, phishing links, and malicious token approvals designed to drain wallets. The difference between claiming safely and losing everything often comes down to a few checks performed before connecting your wallet. This checklist covers them.
Before clicking anything, confirm the airdrop through the project's official channels: its official website reached by typing the address yourself, its verified social media accounts, or its official documentation. Be suspicious of airdrops announced only through random social media posts, direct messages, or emails. Legitimate projects announce airdrops publicly and in advance; they do not surprise you with an urgent claim link in your inbox.
Check whether you were actually eligible. Most airdrops reward specific past activity, such as using a protocol before a certain date or holding a particular token. If you never interacted with the project and someone tells you that you qualify for a large allocation, that is a warning sign. Scammers cast a wide net precisely because many recipients will not check eligibility carefully.
The single most common airdrop scam is a fake claim website that looks identical to the real project's site. These sites are promoted through search ads, social media posts, and phishing messages, and they differ from the real site by a single character in the domain or a different top-level domain. Always navigate to the claim site yourself by typing the official address or using a bookmark, never by clicking a link in a message, post, or email.
Once on the site, check what the claim transaction actually asks you to approve. A legitimate airdrop claim usually requires a simple claim transaction, possibly with a small gas fee. It never requires you to approve unlimited spending of your tokens, to sign a message granting broad permissions, or to enter your seed phrase anywhere. Any site asking for your seed phrase or private key is a scam, without exception. No legitimate project will ever ask for those.
The safest way to claim an airdrop is with a fresh or low-value wallet. If the airdrop is tied to a specific wallet address, use that address, but consider moving your main holdings elsewhere first. If the airdrop allows any wallet, claim into a dedicated claim wallet that holds nothing valuable. This limits the damage if the claim site turns out to be malicious: the worst case is losing the airdropped tokens themselves, not your main portfolio.
After claiming, review your wallet's token approvals using a revocation tool and remove any approval you do not recognise or no longer need. Malicious approvals are the most common way wallets are drained after an airdrop claim, because the approval persists long after the claim transaction is forgotten. Make approval review a habit after every new interaction with an unfamiliar contract.
Watch for these red flags: claims that you must act within hours or lose your allocation, requirements to send funds before claiming, requests to connect multiple wallets, and sites that ask you to download software to claim. Genuine airdrops do not require upfront payments, do not impose frantic deadlines, and do not need software beyond your normal wallet.
Also set realistic expectations. Most airdrops are worth little, and many are worth nothing. The time spent chasing every rumoured airdrop, and the risk taken connecting to unfamiliar sites, often outweighs the reward. Focus on airdrops from projects you actually use and understand, claim them carefully using the checks above, and treat unexpected airdrop announcements with the scepticism they deserve. Free tokens are nice. Keeping your wallet safe is worth far more.
