Most crypto investors buy coins, watch prices move, and end up with a portfolio that looks nothing like what they intended. A coin that doubled now dominates the portfolio, while a coin that halved has faded to irrelevance. Rebalancing is the disciplined practice of periodically restoring your portfolio to its target allocations, selling some of what has grown and buying more of what has shrunk. It is simple, slightly counterintuitive, and one of the most reliable ways to manage risk over time.

Imagine a portfolio split evenly between Bitcoin and Ethereum. If Bitcoin doubles while Ethereum stays flat, the portfolio is now roughly two-thirds Bitcoin. The investor's risk profile has changed without any decision being made: they are now far more exposed to Bitcoin's next move than they planned. Rebalancing sells some Bitcoin and buys Ethereum to restore the fifty-fifty split, locking in some of the Bitcoin gain and increasing exposure to the asset that has lagged.

This feels wrong to many investors, because it means selling winners and buying losers. But that feeling confuses past performance with future prospects. Rebalancing is not a prediction that the lagging asset will outperform. It is a risk management decision: it keeps the portfolio's risk at the level the investor originally chose, rather than letting market movements choose it for them.

Two approaches dominate. Calendar rebalancing restores allocations on a fixed schedule, such as monthly or quarterly, regardless of how far allocations have drifted. It is simple and predictable. Threshold rebalancing triggers only when an allocation drifts beyond a set band, such as five or ten percentage points from target. It trades less often and therefore generates fewer fees and taxable events, but requires monitoring.

For most crypto investors, quarterly rebalancing or a five-percent threshold works well. Monthly rebalancing in crypto is often too frequent, because crypto prices move fast enough that monthly trades generate significant fees and tax events for little risk benefit. Annual rebalancing is usually too slow, because a year of crypto movement can transform a portfolio completely. The right frequency balances risk control against costs, and that balance depends on your portfolio size, fee levels, and tax situation.

Rebalancing is not free. Each trade incurs exchange fees and spreads, and in many jurisdictions each sale is a taxable event, even when the proceeds are immediately reinvested into another coin. On a small portfolio, the fees and taxes from frequent rebalancing can outweigh the risk benefit. This is why threshold rebalancing often suits small portfolios better: it trades only when drift is large enough to matter.

Stablecoins can reduce rebalancing costs. By holding a stablecoin allocation, you can rebalance partly through the stablecoin rather than trading volatile coins against each other directly, and you can use new deposits to rebalance without selling. Adding fresh funds to underweight assets, rather than selling overweight ones, achieves the same allocation shift without triggering taxable sales. This technique, sometimes called rebalancing with cash flows, is particularly useful for investors who invest regularly.

Start by defining target allocations you can defend: for example, fifty percent Bitcoin, thirty percent Ethereum, twenty percent other assets, with a clear reason for each weight. Write these targets down. Set your rebalancing rule, calendar or threshold, and stick to it. When the rule triggers, execute the trades mechanically, without debating whether this time is different. The discipline is the strategy.

Review your targets annually, not monthly. Targets should change when your goals, time horizon, or risk tolerance change, not when the market moves. An investor who changes targets after every price swing is not rebalancing; they are chasing performance. The power of rebalancing comes from its boring consistency: same targets, same rule, executed without drama, year after year. Over time, that discipline produces portfolios that survive crypto's volatility with their risk intact and their gains systematically harvested.
